If you are planning to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), there is an important deadline coming in March 2026 that you need to know about.

The UK government has announced changes to the English language requirements for ILR applications. The new rules take effect on 26 March 2027.

This post explains what is changing, who is affected, and what you should consider doing before the deadline.

What Is the Current English Language Requirement for ILR?

Most ILR applicants currently need to demonstrate English language ability at CEFR Level B1 or above. This can be done by passing an approved Secure English Language Test (SELT), or by demonstrating that English is your first language or that you have a degree taught in English.

The requirements vary depending on your visa category. Some routes — such as the 10-year long residence route — have different or no English language requirements.

What Is Changing From March 2027?

The government is raising the required English language standard for ILR applicants. The full details of the revised threshold and accepted tests are set out in the new Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules.

Key points to be aware of:

  • The minimum standard is being raised from B1 to B2 for some categories.
  • The list of accepted English language tests and qualifications may be updated.
  • Existing exemptions may be narrowed.

If you are planning an ILR application, you should check the current rules now rather than waiting — particularly if your qualifying period ends around 2027.

Who Is Most at Risk of Being Affected?

If your ILR eligibility date falls after 26 March 2026, you will need to meet the new requirements. If it falls before that date — and you are ready to apply — there may be a strong case for applying under the current rules.

This is particularly relevant to:

  • Skilled Workers who arrived in 2021 or 2022 and are approaching their 5-year qualifying date (noting the separate proposed retrospective changes to the qualifying period itself).
  • Applicants on the 10-year long residence route who may currently be exempt from English language requirements.
  • Spouse and partner visa holders on the 5-year family route.

What Tests Are Accepted?

The Home Office only accepts Secure English Language Tests (SELTs) for most immigration purposes. These are different from general English qualifications like IELTS for UKVI. You must take an approved SELT from an approved test centre.

Common accepted tests include: IELTS for UKVI, Trinity College London ISE, LanguageCert International ESOL SELT, and Skills for English.

Always check the current approved list on GOV.UK before booking a test, as this can change.

What Should You Do Now?

  • Check your qualifying date for ILR and whether it falls before or after 26 March 2027.
  • If you currently meet the B1 threshold, consider whether to apply before the new rules take effect.
  • If you do not yet have a qualifying English language test, book one now — test slots can fill up quickly.
  • Get legal advice if you are uncertain which category or standard applies to you.
