A sponsor licence allows UK employers to recruit overseas workers on the Skilled Worker visa and other sponsored routes. Without one, you cannot legally employ most non-settled workers from outside the UK.

Do you need one?

If you want to hire someone who requires a Skilled Worker visa, yes. The licence is issued by UKVI and must be maintained carefully. It is not a one-off process — it comes with ongoing duties.

What are the requirements?

You need to demonstrate that your business is genuine, operating lawfully, and capable of meeting sponsor duties. You will need to provide documentation including your company registration, HMRC records, employer liability insurance, and evidence of your HR systems and processes.

Key sponsor duties

Once licensed, you have ongoing obligations. You must report certain changes about your sponsored workers, keep detailed records, and cooperate fully with Home Office compliance visits. Failure to meet these duties can result in your licence being downgraded or revoked.

Common mistakes

The most common errors are: assigning a Certificate of Sponsorship before the visa application is ready, failing to maintain adequate records, and not notifying UKVI of relevant changes in good time.
